Here in Des Moines we have 2 induction lines per SSIU. Watching the DCS log, a good portion of the read and cingulated mail is assigned to return. I'm thinking that if we could increase the separation that would cut down the return mail. We tried slowing belt speeds that helped but they wouldn't leave it alone. Is there any other ideas, or experience with this.

Hi Steve, I would check the SPC reports for recirc. Check hsiu full and other percentages to see what's up. I assume you watch the tray line and dont have a large percentage of trays full, because if you did it couldnt assign a package to a full tray. Or, if the inductions back up it obviously couldnt load or assign more. Do you actually only have 2 physical inductions? We have 3 per, and I was not aware that anyone had 2. The timing of the dcs screen vs induction could maybe throw you off a bit as well. I've never done this but you could just put in a single package and check the time between showing up on DCS and when it inducts. If you have more info that would be helpful, but if everything is working correctly, then slowing down the sorter section might make sense.

I wouldn't think slowing down the sorter section will help. Looking at your performance reports for the last few days, a couple of problems seem to be common. 1st is HSIU Full, which means the machine read it but couldn't put it on the sorter because no trays were available at that time. Check to see if this is the case and why? ( keyers getting priority over SSIU or backed up runouts ). 2cd problem I see is too much lost tracking due to strays, meaning the machine read it but lost track of the package before it could put it on the induction line. Check your photoeyes for gilches and belt speeds with a tach all along the dcs system to make sure everything is in sync and where it should be (425 fpm ).
